Painting found in a garage sale in Southeast Asia ended up to the prestigious Old Master Auction of Sotheby’s London.
Beauty and power of the artwork were brought to life due to the meticulous restoration effort of a respectable German restorer, it was during the restoration that “lead white” pigment was confirmed, it was the only white used in European easel painting until the end of 19th century and has been produced since early historical time until 1750. Image was submitted and was eventually cleared from the archive of art lost register – a large list of all art works that have been lost and stolen in the past. Painting received impotant written attribution from Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, a scholar of battle painting and author of Battaglisti, The Painting of the Battle from the 16th to the 18th century.
Almost cinematic rendition by the artist tells best from a distance. The main opponents can be seen clashing in a well-balanced backdrop. The painter showed his skills in enforcing a uniform dynamism into the crowded layouts.
The museum quality oil on canvas painting titled, “A Calvary Engagement”, with measurements of 94 x 169.5 centimeters or 37 x 66 3/4 inches by 17th century Neapolitan painter Marzio Masturzo will be part of Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale of Sotheby’s London this 10 December 2015.
